Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) is an artistic-scientific university with the right to award doctoral and post-doctoral qualifications. With around 1,000 students in the fields of fine arts, art education, performing arts, design, visual communication, art history and media studies, HBK Braunschweig is one of the largest art academies in Germany.

With the programme Braunschweig Projects, HBK Braunschweig offers seven 12-month fellowships & art residencies for the year 2027/28 on behalf of the State of Lower Saxony.

Braunschweig Projects are part of the university’s and the state’s promotion of young artists and also serve to internationalise HBK. The programme is aimed at artists who would like to work on a project in the immediate vicinity of HBK Braunschweig. With their project proposal, fellows should make a significant contribution towards the further development of forms of artistic practice.

Fellows will be assigned a mentor, who will help with the integration into the university life. Mentors are fine arts professor and can be chosen by the fellows themselves. In addition, all professors of the fine arts department will be available for artistic discourse with the fellows.

Fellows will have the opportunity to present the current status of their artistic project within the university. In addition, they are expected to participate in the Welcome Weeks (April 19–30, 2027) and in a joint final presentation in January/February 2028.

Duration of residency

12 months (01.04.2027 – 31.03.2028)

Accommodation

Private studio apartments within a converted industrial building. Fellows can move into their accommodation from April 15, 2027.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Scholarship are awarded in following categories: - visual arts (5 scholarships) - sound art (2 scholarships) Studio / Workspace The studio apartments are designed for one person and will be available rent-free for the duration of the fellowship. A contribution of 250 EUR per month towards incidental living costs must be paid by the fellows. During the funding period, fellows are required to reside at HBK for at least eight months during the lecture period in the summer and winter semesters. Fees and support

Funding is provided in form of stipends in the amount of 1,600 EUR per month over a period of 12 months. The funding period will begin on April 1, 2027. There will also be an allowance for project and travel costs.

Expectations towards the artist

With their project proposal, fellows should make a significant contribution towards the further development of forms of artistic practice.
A requirement for a fellowship is a successfully completed art degree. The most recent studies must have been completed after April 1, 2016 and before April 1, 2023. Applicants must be able to show proof of extensive artistic practice and exhibition participation.
