Call for Content | Arts & AI

culture360.ASEF.org welcomes proposals from writers to contribute articles, podcasts and video interviews for its latest open call ' Arts in the Wake of AI'. We are looking for content that f oreground how cultural professionals and organisations are adapting to the spectrum of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The arts and cultural sector is caught in the grips of another existential shift: the widespread adoption of AI, spanning generative tools, machine learning, recommender systems, and algorithms.

Artists, cultural practitioners and professionals from across Asia and Europe are working with AI in a multitude of capacities. The synergy between an artist’s creativity and AI technologies has resulted in transformations in how we collaborate, innovate, produce and disseminate works. In that regard, how AI has been adopted to diversify artistic styles, formats and practices needs no further explanation.

This shift has however triggered new reflections and threats relating to cultural diversity, artistic rights, protection and recognition of artistic works, fair remuneration and more. How we are choosing to navigate the inevitable progression of AI, while balancing the ethical, social and legal trade-offs surrounding the intersection of creativity and technology, is thus at the heart of the debate.

What type of editorial content are we looking for?

Through this call, culture360 seeks contributions that are case study based, demonstrating concrete examples of how practitioners, professionals and organisations from various countries are making sense of, and navigating these technological changes thoughtfully.

Regardless of format (i.e. article, video interviews or podcast), submissions should be grounded in real-world evidence, experiences or practices.

We welcome contributions that address, but are not limited to the following topics:

• Impact of AI on cultural diversity, fairness and inclusivity : What possibilities and tensions have emerged in relation to these areas across the cultural sectors of Asia and Europe? We are interested in issues such as the roles and working conditions of practitioners and professionals, who participates and whose work is recognised across the sector.
• The environmental costs of AI :What are some sustainability issues connected to the use of AI in the cultural sector? Examples of structural and practical solutions at the national, regional and local levels in managing our digital footprint are encouraged.
• AI governance in the cultural sector :Policies, framework and strategies that support and respond to the ethical and responsible use of AI. How do we handle issues of online copyright infringement, intellectual property protection and enforcement in relation to AI-generated cultural content?

Who can apply?

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

• Be a national of an ASEM partner country
• Have previous experience in writing articles, recording podcasts or producing video interviews
• Be proficient in the English language 
• Have knowledge of, or demonstrate involvement in the Asian and European arts and culture scene
• An existing channel or platform to allow for further dissemination of the content (e.g. via other arts and culture websites, online/offline journals, newspapers, publications etc.) would be an advantage
• Work in a virtual capacity (writers need not be based in Singapore)

Note

• Each commissioned article, podcast or video interview will be paid a fee of Singapore Dollars (SGD) 250
• Academic research papers and non-arts related subjects will not be considered
• Articles should be written in journalistic style, with a length of 800 to 1000 words and accompanied by at least four pictures with appropriate credits
• Podcasts and video interviews should range between 15 to 20 minutes in length
• We welcome up to two proposals per application. However, this does not mean that both proposals would be automatically selected. We will select the proposal that best aligns with the editorial focus of the website
• Detailed guidelines for articles, podcast recordings and video interviews will be shared once the proposal is selected
• Only writers whose proposal(s) have been selected will be notified
