Our Open Call Grounding the Cloud is opening for the second time Data storage in the cloud or the use of chatbots based on generative AI, all of these digital habits we find self-evident. Yet they come with real ecological consequences, think of the energy consumption of data centres, the use of raw materials for hardware, and the ever growing amount of e-waste. What opportunities are there to reduce the impact of our virtual data? How can we use and reuse digital technology within the limits of our planet? With the Open Call Grounding the Cloud, we support projects within digital culture that provide insight into the ecological impact of digital technology, reduce that impact, or offer sustainable alternatives. Think of topics like regenerative culture, degrowth, low-tech, reusing obsolete hardware, and taking responsibility for the technologies we use.
